Day One: Check!

Note: This post is part of Fatherhood Friday at Dad Blogs, where all the cool kids are hanging out. (Moms are welcome over there!) I *might* even have a column called “Teen Angst” there. Welcome to my visitors from DB; thanks for stopping in!

We sent the kids off to their first day of school yesterday without a hitch as usual; it’s hard to believe that they are both in high school.

Every year on the first day, I take a photo of them standing together. I’ve done this since the older one was in preschool and the younger one wasn’t even in school yet; I was going to post that photo today along with the new one, but decided against it because I didn’t want to give you the idea that I was feeling all sappy and sentimental; I’m not. I’ll post that photo another day; it’s ADORABLE.

I do, however, want to tell you about a funny conversation I had with the older one. He was getting ready to leave–and I think, trying to escape the Day One photo–when I said, “Whoa! Aren’t you forgetting? I have to take pictures!”

Him: “Ugh.”

Me: “Don’t say ‘Ugh!’ You’re a Senior! This is the last picture I’ll ever take of you on the first day of school!”

Him: “I’m going to school next year: you can take a picture of me on the first day, next year.”

Me: “Uh…I don’t think so!”

Him: “Why not?”

Me: “Because it’s likely you’ll not be living here when you go to college.”

Him: “So? You can still come and take a photo of me!”

Me: “If you think I have nothing better to do than to chase you around for a photo on the first day of college, you’re out of your mind.”

Him: *crickets* {trying to think of a snappy response, and failing.} “Okay, then let’s do this.”

By the way, he did have one teacher who thanked him for dressing up on the first day.

Before I close this up, I wanted to add that I’ve read lots of posts this week by other bloggers, about how their little one was sad and lonely when the older kids went off to school, and I wanted to share that we also had a little one who was sad.

But she’ll get over it.

Great post and I love the shirt. It made me LOL.

Also are you sure your son isn't going to be living at home while going to college? LOL!

I like the idea of the picture every yr on the 1st day of school. I am going to need to do that this yr. School doesn't start here in Maryland until 8/31.

    Happy Friday!

  • Mom24 August 21, 2009, 12:04 pm

Funny. Poor puppy. Where have all the fun ones gone eh?

Don't worry, you won't get the first day of classes photo, but you will get the first day at college photos.

  • Jason August 21, 2009, 12:07 pm

We also do the first day of school photos. We have another week yet though until it happens this year.

  • NYC Girl August 21, 2009, 12:44 pm

I love your 1st day of school picture idea! When I have kids I want to do the samething!

WOW! School starts sooo early by you. NYC kids don't go back until 9/9. I really think they's revolt going back before Labor day!

    Love the doggie pic! Awwww!

  • Baby News August 21, 2009, 12:55 pm

LOL! Love the shirt. Love the dialogue (it probably hadn't occurred to him that you really won't be there). And I feel for the dog!

  • LceeL August 21, 2009, 1:43 pm

Awww. The poor puppy. How sad will he be next year when the boy doesn't come home after school?

  • Anonymous August 21, 2009, 2:23 pm

They are so grown up I can't beleive it. Time really flies. Are you sure the older boy is going away to school next year?

Did our granddog bark when they left? I sure miss you all.

HAH! I love that t-shirt! Your boys are awesome.

I think you should definitely cart the younger boy off to older boy's place next year and take a pic of them together! hehe

  • Meeko Fabulous August 21, 2009, 4:21 pm

I don't miss the first day of school at all! I dreaded it actually. Your pup is sooo cute!

  • House of Jules August 21, 2009, 5:43 pm

YESSSS, the tuxedo shirt makes an important appearance! So proud! Uh, of the boys, too. πŸ™‚

  • Tom August 21, 2009, 5:43 pm

I think it would be hilarious if you DID chase him around next year to get a picture of him on the first day of college. And wear curlers and a bathroom.

    From Dawn:

    Great picture!

I'm totally going to chase Nick down at college this year. He'll love it! πŸ˜‰ LOL

  • PJ Mullen August 22, 2009, 1:25 am

I'm with Tom on this one. Now he isn't expecting it, so you should totally show up to take the picture!

  • surprised mom August 22, 2009, 1:58 am

    Awwwww! That poor puppy.
Love the photo and the shirt!
Does your son really think you'll be running after him with a camera on the first day of college? Maybe he secretly wants to continue the tradition?

  • Tara R. August 22, 2009, 3:08 am

That is a great tradition. They will be glad to have those photos when I have kids of their own.

    Your poor dog!

  • Smallprint August 22, 2009, 7:22 am

Poor pup! I think he needs a little four legged friend!

  • Vodka Mom August 22, 2009, 11:29 am

  • Sue August 22, 2009, 11:48 am

How cute that he wants you to take his first day of college pic next year!

They look great! And poooooor Roxie…

  • Melisa with one S August 22, 2009, 12:51 pm

Rob: That's one of his favorite shirts; my sister got it for him two Hanukkahs ago. It is getting to be a bit small, but he's going to wear it as long as he can. And actually, he *might* be living at home for the first year or two of college, due to the fact that there is a school in our area that has a great program for his major, but it all depends on where he ends up, scholarship-wise. πŸ™‚

Mom24: Yeah, I know. Can't imagine it at this point, but I know this year is going to FLY by!

Jason: It's a great tradition; I'm glad we did it!

NYCGirl: It ends early, too! The older boy graduates on May 23! Crazy, huh?

Baby News: I know, the dog ends up being my "best buddy" until I take her for a long walk on the 3 days (of 5) that I don't have to go to work. Then she settles down and I can get my stuff done. πŸ™‚

LceeL: Probably very sad, but for about 3 minutes; that's how a dog's memory is. haha

Mom: Yes, I'm sure! I can't believe it either!

Katie: I think in actuality he'd kill me if I did that. hee hee

Meeko: She IS quite adorable, thanks! πŸ™‚

Julesie: I know! He wore it to go cosmic bowling with friends last week too.

Tom: Curlers and a bathROOM? How would I do that?? (haha, just kidding)

    Dawn: I dare you. πŸ™‚

PJ: Maybe I'll just *threaten* to do that. πŸ˜‰

Surprised Mom: I think he secretly likes that we've done it all these years, but really would kill me if I attempted it next year…

Tara: Hopefully they'll appreciate it! Who knows?

Smallprint: haha! I promised my hubs this would be the last dog, EVER. But I like the idea of two dogs! (only in my head)

Vodka Mom: Thanks! And thanks for stopping in!

Sue: I think it may have been a stall tactic. Not sure!

  • WeaselMomma August 22, 2009, 3:55 pm

That is very cool. I really liked this post. I like that they posed for a pic without too much flak. The dog, cute and sad.

  • The Devoted Dad August 23, 2009, 4:20 am

I will have to start that tradition with my kids too. My daughter just started the 3 year old classroom last week (she goes 2 days a week currently). Maybe I can take a quick catch up photo this next Monday. πŸ™‚

  • Heather August 23, 2009, 6:24 am

Awww! That is adorable! And poor Roxie! πŸ™ We had that tradition too, growing up, and it's one of my happiest things– looking back on alllll the years. πŸ™‚ Thankfully, I don't have to have my picture taken anymore. Altho, I'm sure if someone gave C the idea, he'd totally do it.

    HAH!

  • Andie August 24, 2009, 7:04 pm

    cute!
