My Favorite Summer Fitness Activities

My husband and kids are true outdoorsy types, who love to be physically active by doing things like hiking, biking, kayaking, and other such “fun” stuff. Traditionally, I am not, and do not. This is nothing new. It is likely that the main reason why–every day–I went down the hallway from my kindergarten class to the second and third grade team for reading class (Go, me!) was because I spent way too much time sitting on my tush in front of the television, in the house, learning about letters and numbers from the Muppets. Play outside? Bah humbug.

Nothing much changed as I grew older. Sure, I have lots of memories of being outside with my friends later, doing cartwheels, catching fireflies, and even playing Ding Dong Ditch, but my preferred area of comfort was within the air-conditioned walls of the house.

Now that I’m an adult and a mom, I’ve really tried to be more active outside, to be “one” with nature. It’s important to model behavior for your kids, and I take that seriously. I can’t say I’m an outdoorsy type yet, but each summer I get a little bit more exposure to the sun (while wearing sunscreen, of course!).

Summer has begun in a grand way for us in the past couple of years with Chicago’s Bike the Drive, which I’ve written about on Suburban Scrawl. To me, the tradition of getting up at O’dark Thirty to haul our butts (and our bikes) all the way from our home in the western suburbs to the city, then ride the full thirty miles (making sure to drink water!), and then head home, exhausted…well, that says summer to me. Here’s a picture of Jim and me at this year’s Bike the Drive. Aren’t we adorable?

Every now and then on summer weekends, my family will take a ride on the Illinois Prairie Path, which is always fun, because our neighborhood is very close to a major hub. We can explore the suburbs in all different directions! The rides are especially nice now that the younger boy is fifteen, too: he doesn’t whine anymore about how tired he is after ten minutes!

The other thing I love to do in the summer is walk my dog, Roxie. Being a beagle, she can really never get too much exercise. And that’s good news for me, because time allowing, I can also benefit from as much physical activity as possible! During the summer, I do my best to take her on a nice, long walk on a daily basis. It makes us both happy!

    We LOVE to go hiking. Our daughter still fits into a backpack higher and there's a nice 3 mile wooded trail close to us. Seeing your picture of Chicago makes me miss home!!

    Hmmm being I'm NOT the outdoorsy type this one is a little tricky…I do like to walk my puppy, not sure how well that's going to go over come snow season. And let's not forget the strenuous 12 oz curls around the fire pit, yeah I think that one is my favorite hands down!

    Um…I don't like to sweat. It's gross! lol I do enjoy walking on the beach on a breezy evening (when I'm near the beach, that is!) 😉

    My favorite summer activity is working in my yard, pulling weeds,digging up flowers and transplanting them,picking my produce and hoeing like a mad woman at times all so I can sit in my lawn chair and look around at my yard… my personality.

    Since it is summer I enjoy swimming. I can't get enough of being in the water.

    We also enjoy pulling our boys in the wagon. Getting out for a family walk that way is a great time for us to spend together.

    I stay fit by walking. I try to do 3 miles at least 5 times a week. It is an easy exercise that our whole family can do together.
