Grown-Up Groupie

When I was in high school, I was crazy—CRAZY—about the band Berlin. Though their biggest hit was “Take My Breath Away” from the “Top Gun” soundtrack, that came later on and the song really doesn’t represent the kind of band they were. I loved their earliest stuff, which was heavy with synthesizers, starting with the albums “Information” and “Pleasure Victim”. I listened to that music all the time, and naturally knew every song by heart. My friends and I watched MTV for hours a day, and whenever the video for “The Metro” came on, I was glued.

Soon “No More Words” got heavy rotation on the radio, and in turn MTV played the heck out of that video. I ate up every second of the “Bonnie and Clyde-style” plot, and thought John Crawford (bass player) looked ever-so-yummy. I ended up writing a few letters to John, crazy teenaged fan that I was, and he answered with hand-written letters not once, not twice, but three times. By that point, I was breathing Berlin in, 24/7. My biggest dream at the time was to meet the band.

Who’d have thought that, twenty-six years later, I’d be a suburban wife and mom of two boys, strolling through the aisles of the Crate and Barrel outlet, listening to a lovely acoustic version of “No More Words”?

Not me. And I wouldn’t change a thing.

Great. You have a Crate and Barrel outlet near your house too?

I never feel as old as when a song from my teenagerhood is on Muzak.
